In 1969 Donnie Kirk started General Air Service with a goal to provide quality work at reasonable cost for all customers. As a native of West Knoxville he knew the area was growing and would not only provide good business opportunities but also was the area where he wanted to raise his family.
Through the 1970s and 80s General Air Service continued to serve our customers with the kind of personal care they had become accustom to. As the new residential construction market grew so did our company. Lead by Donnie’s tireless efforts we became one of the leading installers of new HVAC equipment in East Tennessee.
During the early 1990s Donnie’s son, Doug Kirk, moved from full time student and part time duct work installer into a new role as office manager. Seeing an opportunity to take advantage of the available technology, Doug updated our bookkeeping methods and developed a customer data base so we could provide better service records for our customers. At the request of many customers, he began to develop our “Preferred Customer Maintenance Agreement” program. This program gives customers peace of mind knowing the most expensive appliance in their home is being professionally maintained and serviced twice a year. This new emphasis on service led us to expand our office staff and add a scheduler and bookkeeper. Doug’s roll developed into general manager allowing Donnie to continue to oversee all installation jobs and personally meet with customers to provide estimates for their projects.
As we moved into the 21st Century, General Air Service continued to stay on top of available technologies with new higher efficiency equipment and digital controls. Our goal was to simplify the lives of our customers. We were able to divide our focus between service and new equipment sales. We installed systems in as many as 350 new homes per year while always keeping our existing customers needs as our top priority. During this period we were pleased to have more customers who had purchased systems from us in the past coming back to have us install new units.
In 2006 and 2010 the federal standards for heating and cooling systems underwent many changes and General Air Service was committed to staying ahead of the curve. Our technicians attend many factory sponsored classes to insure they have the most current training available. This allows us to offer more choices in heating and cooling products.
During the last twenty years General Air Service also grew in the commercial HVACR industry. We found that many general contractors wanted local companies to not only install but also service their commercial projects. We are very competitive on restaurant, office, retail stores, and education renovation and new construction projects. Because of our experience we can often offer value engineering options to customers which may cut their mechanical budget by 10 to 25%.
